The cell as unit of life in terms of its structure and function

Various cells have various structures but when they perform functions in coordination with each other then they become unit of life. It means there is a division of labour among the cells of an organism. The phenomenon is common to both animal and plant cells.

Plant Cells
In plants variety of cells are present which perform different functions e.g.
  •         i.            Xylem cells conduct water and mineral salts soil from to the aerial parts of the plant.
  •       ii.            Phloem cells transport food.
  •     iii.            Sclerenchymatous cells give support to the plants
  •      iv.            Parenchymatous cells store surplus food.

As these cells perform different functions they show great variation in shapes and sizes. Despite the structural and functional diversity, the plant cells have s common plant of organization.
